What We Know Regarding the Fatalities of the Bondi Terror Attack

No fewer than 16 people perished and more than 40 sustained injuries when assailants fired on a Hanukkah celebration at Bondi Beach, an incident local authorities have called a terrorist attack.

As of the newest reports, authorities have stated the death toll stands at 16, encompassing one of the alleged attackers. Additionally, 42 wounded individuals were admitted to the hospital.

Those who died have not yet been publicly named, but authorities state their ages are between 10 and 87 years old.

Listed are the victims who are known to date.

Eli Schlanger

Originally from London rabbi Eli Schlanger, 41, was the first to be publicly identified.

Described as a father-of-five, he worked as the assistant rabbi at a local Jewish cultural centre. Family members and acquaintances described him as “lively, dynamic, and vibrant and a very warm outgoing person who loved to help people”.

“How is it possible that a happy rabbi who went to a beach to spread happiness and light, to make the world a better place, meet his end in this way?” a family member remarked.

Schlanger and his wife celebrated the arrival of their newest son in October.

Alexander Kleytman

Alexander Kleytman was also confirmed among the deceased, according to his wife.

She recounted the moments before the attack, stating they had been standing together when the shooting erupted. “He pushed his body up because he wished to be near me,” she recalled.

The husband and wife were both Holocaust survivors, having experienced immense hardship in their childhood. They had subsequently relocated to Australia from Ukraine.

Dan Elkayam

The French authorities have announced that French man Dan Elkayam is a casualty.

Officially, a senior official declared that France mourned with his family and loved ones, the Jewish community, and the Australian people.

“This despicable act is a fresh and tragic example of a revolting outpouring of antisemitic hatred that we must eradicate,” the statement continued.

One Child

A 10-year-old girl who was rushed to the a children's hospital has been confirmed among the fatalities, authorities stated.

One Israeli Citizen

One victim from Israel was a fatality in the incident, according to multiple sources citing the Israeli foreign ministry.

Those Injured

From the 42 people transported to hospitals, many are still receiving treatment, with five in serious condition. Those hurt include two officers who responded to the attack.

A casualty is a bystander who rushed to the scene to confront one of the attackers. Described as a local hero, he sustained gunshot wounds but is expected to recover in hospital.

Arsen Ostrovsky

Among the injured is Arsen Ostrovsky, a human rights lawyer. Reports indicate he was injured and underwent treatment in hospital.

Communicating, he recounted the scene as an “absolute bloodbath,” but also praised the actions of those who rushed to help. He said he believed it was a “stroke of luck” he survived.

Evan Zlatkis

Evan Zlatkis, a community director, was another casualty in the attack. He described he listened to “dozens and dozens” of shots.

“I thought it was something less lethal, but it penetrated my own skin and into my leg,” he explained. “I sustained a gunshot wound. I received first aid. I’m ok.”
