One 60-day journey circling Australia has been cancelled days after the death of an older woman who was left behind by the ship on a remote tropical isle.

The elderly woman had been walking on Lizard Island with fellow passengers from the vessel, but parted ways from the party for a pause. The vessel sailed away leaving her and went back several hours later after the crew discovered the passenger was not present.

An extensive hunt discovered her body the next day.

Authorities are examining the event, in coordination with investigators and the medical examiner.

The CEO of the shipping company announced that travelers and personnel on the Coral Adventurer were informed that the rest of the cruise had been terminated due to the "unfortunate death and previous engine troubles".

Through an announcement, he mentioned that passengers would be provided a full refund, and said the organization was working "to arrange the travel back of the individuals via chartered flights".

Authorities also issued an revised announcement, and said they had "issued a order to the Captain" banning any further travelers from entering the vessel.

The representative said that they would inspect the vessel in the port city upon its arrival.

Chronology of Events

The ship initially left the coastal city on the 24th of October, and was only 48 hours into the journey at the moment of the 80-year-old's death. Lizard Island was the opening port on the journey.

Passengers on the vessel - who typically pay substantial amounts of money to join the cruise - were taken there for a day trip with the option of hiking or snorkeling.

Relatives Statement

The offspring of the elderly passenger said that her loved ones was "shocked and grieved that the liner left the island after an organised excursion without my parent".

In her statement, she portrayed her mum as an "energetic 80-year-old" who was a member of a walking group.

"From the little facts we have been provided, it appears that there was a lapse of care and ordinary reasoning," she stated.

She further stated that she hoped the investigation would be able to identify what "the organization should have performed that might have protected Mum's existence".

"Based on information from the police that it was a very hot period, and mother became unwell on the mountain ascent," she revealed.

"They requested her to return, unescorted. Then the ship departed, seemingly without doing a headcount.

"During some point in that sequence, or soon after, mum passed away, alone."

Organization Response

In a statement, the Head verified that the operator was "collaborating extensively with investigators to aid their investigation".

He stated that the company was "very regretful that this has occurred" and had extended its complete assistance to the loved ones.

Shipping Sector Standards

The ship accommodates up to a hundred twenty passengers with 46 personnel, according to company information. It was specifically designed to access isolated regions of the Australian coast and is fitted with "tenders" - small boats used to take passengers on day excursions.

Occurrences like this are rare, and cruise ships have protocols to document which individuals are boarding or leaving, according to maritime specialists.

"Leaving covertly or [back] onboard just isn't an choice," an authority stated.

Cruise lines consider these methods extremely carefully and have "clever tech in place to prevent such incidents from occurring," the authority added.

"This is most likely a shocking - and unfortunate - isolated incident."
