Nazi Munitions, Torpedoes and Mines: The Way Marine Life Flourishes on Dumped Armaments
In the slightly salty waters off the Germany's shoreline rests a wasteland of World War II explosives, torpedo heads and mines. Dumped from vessels at the end of the World War II and neglected, countless munitions have become matted together over the years. They form a corroding carpet on the shallow, muddy seafloor of the Lübeck Bay in the western part of the Baltic Sea.
Over the decades, the Nazi arsenal was ignored and neglected. A growing number of visitors came to the sandy beaches and tranquil sea for water sports, kite surfing and entertainment venues. Beneath the surface, the munitions decayed.
Researchers thought to see a desert, with no life because it was all contaminated, states a scientist.
When the first scientists went searching to see what they were affecting to the marine environment, some of us anticipated finding a barren area, with no organisms because it was all poisoned, explains a scientist.
What they found astonished them. Vedenin remembers his scientists shouting with surprise when the submersible first relayed pictures. This was a remarkable experience, he recalls.
Thousands of ocean life had settled among the munitions, developing a regenerated ecosystem more populous than the sea floor nearby.
This ocean community was testament to the persistence of life. Indeed remarkable how much life we observe in areas that are supposed to be dangerous and dangerous, he states.
In excess of 40 sea stars had piled on to one visible fragment of explosive material. They were residing on metal shells, detonator compartments and carrying containers just centimetres from its volatile core. An average of more than 40,000 animals were living on every meter squared of the explosives, scientists reported in their research on the discovery. The nearby seabed was much less diverse, with only 8,000 individuals on every square metre.
It is paradoxical that items that are meant to kill all life are drawing so much life, states Vedenin. It's evident how nature adapts after a devastating occurrence such as the World War II and how, in some way, life finds its way to the most risky areas.
Man-made Features as Marine Habitats
Man-made features such as sunken vessels, offshore windfarms, oil rigs and pipelines can offer replacements, restoring some of the lost marine environment. This study shows that explosives could be similarly positive – the explosion of life on those in the Bay of Lübeck is expected to be repeated in different areas.
Between 1946 and the post-war period, 1.6 million tons of weapons were disposed of off the German shoreline. Countless of individuals loaded them in vessels; a portion were dropped in allocated areas, others just dumped during transport. This is the initial instance scientists have studied how marine life has reacted.

Sunken ships and weapons dump sites effectively serve as refuges – they are not official reserves, but nearly any kind of human activity is banned, states Vedenin. Consequently a lot of marine species that are typically scarce or diminishing, such as the Baltic cod, are thriving.
Future Issues
Wherever military conflict has taken place in the past 100 years, surrounding seas are typically littered with weapons, says Vedenin. Millions of tonnes of volatile compounds lie in our marine environments.
The locations of these explosives are insufficiently recorded, partially because of sovereign limits, classified armed forces records and the situation that archives are hidden in historic archives. They pose an explosion and security danger, as well as threat from the ongoing release of poisonous compounds.
